TEI 2013, February 10-13, 2013, Barcelona, Spain ACM Abstract In this paper we present the concept and initial design stages of the TaSST (Tactile Sleeve for Social Touch). The TaSST consists of a soft pressure-sensitive input layer, and an output layer containing vibration motors. A touch to ones own sleeve is felt as a vibration on the sleeve of another person. The idea behind the TaSST is to enable two people to communicate different types of touch at a distance. We will outline the design process of the TaSST, describe some initial results from a user study, and discuss possible applications of the TaSST.

Action-based touch observation in adults with high functioning autism: Can compromised self-other distinction abilities link social and sensory everyday problems?

Next to social problems, individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often report severe sensory difficulties. Altered processing of touch is however a stronger mediator of social symptoms' severity than altered processing of for instance vision or audition. Why is this the case? We reasoned that sensory difficulties may be linked to social problems in ASD through insufficient self-other di...

Neuronal basis of tactile sense in the rat whisker system

Using their whiskers, rats have tactile capacities rivaling those of the human with our fingertips. We have carried out experiments to explore how neurons encode touch signals to build up a central representation. Touch signals begin with the receptors in the follicle of each whisker and can be traced to a columnar module in somatosensory cortex that is connected with the same whisker: the well...

Effect of Touch on the Intensity and Duration of Venipuncture Pain in the School-age Children

Background: Pain has physiological and psychological effects on a child's life and various body systems. Tactile stimulation affects the central nervous system and releases analgesic drugs resulting in the inhibition of pain. Aim: The main purpose of this study was effect of touch on the intensity and duration of pain during venipuncture in school-age children. Methods: This clinical trial was ...

The Milling of Metalsthrough Adaptive Neuro-FuzzyInference System (ANFIS) for non-touch Measuring of the Temperature to Reduce Coolant

In this paper, an innovated method is used for cooling Milling zone of Stainless Steel via Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) using non-touch laser thermometer for non-touch measuring of the temperature. This method is economically appropriate because of its optimization in using coolant. In comparison to the ways which were designed to optimize the ratio of coolant, this method is t...
